The Department of Library science

The department of Library science was formed in October, 1947 attached to the faculty of philology of Baku State University. The department has had a great importance as a founder of fundamental investigation in accordance with Library science, as a scientific center, arranging the training of Library science in Azerbaijan and defining its future direction of development.

The significant achievement in the sphere of the National Library science in Azerbaijan gained in the second quarter of 20th century and the training of high skilled librarian specialists is connected with activity of this department.

The candidate of philology Qahramanov Aliheydar Bala oglu was the first head of this department and he worked at this post until 1959. As there was no specialist getting academic rank in the sphere of Library science, after the death of Qahramanov A., Alizade Hasan, the candidate of philology has carried out this post.

Since 1963 the candidate historical science, Khalafov Abuzar, the senior lecturer is the head of the department. He worked as teacher in the department of Library science in 1955. From that time he has leaded this department without a break and he is an organizer of all scientific and educational achievements gained by the department.

During 46 years, for the scientific- pedagogical activity in Baku State University Khalafov Abuzar heading the department of Library science successfully has been awarded some awards as: doctor, professor, academician of International Information Academy in UN, (real member), “Honoured Scientist of Azerbaijan Republic”, “Honoured cultural worker”, the order of “Shohret”, the President pension and others.

Prof. Khalafov Abuzar who is working in the BSU for a long time, created the scientific school of the national bibliography in Azerbaijan, trained more than 20 doctors and candidates in this sphere, besides our motherland in Russia, Georgia and in Uzbekistan he was opponent of the candidacy and doctor thesis, maintaining in accordance with the history of library work and as a result of these the department has been the influential center of bibliography in Caucasus region.

The head of the department, Khalafov Abuzar has more than 270 scientific works, at the same time more than 30 textbooks, school supplies, monographs, programs and etc. which have a great importance for the history of Library work in Azerbaijan and for the theory of national Library science.

In the faculty of Library-information in the basis of the department of Library science there were created the department of “Library resources and information search system” in 1991, “Bibliography and publishing works” in 1992.

All workers of the department have an important role on controlling the faculty of Librarianship-Information, on increasing scientific potential and on improvement educational quality. The department holds an inquiry into the area of the history of Library work in Azerbaijan, theoretical and practical problems of the national librarianship in condition of contemporary information society and as well as the learning of the world successes on librarianship and use it in Azerbaijan.

For the first time in the years of independence, the department had prepared publications for the bachelor textbooks, school supplies, monographs, programs, methodical instructions about the subjects of “Introduction to the librarianship”, “Library service”, “Controlling and arranging of library work”, “The principles of acquisition of library work”, “The history of the Library work in Azerbaijan”, “The history of the world libraries”, “The scientific-methodical supply of the Libraries”, “The information science of librarianship” and etc.

At the same time they prepared programs, educational and methodical resources for masters as:

“The modern problems of librarianship”, “The World National Libraries”, “The modern problems of the library-information work in USA and in West Europe”, “Library marketing”, “The technology of patent information in library”, “The legal basis of the library work in Azerbaijan”, “The modern problems of the methodical guarantee of the libraries ”, “The history and Methodology of the Library science”, “The educational method of the Library science subject”, “Library and information service to the specialist in the set of scientific-technical libraries”, “The mutual relations between library and publication”.

Generally, the total number of publications of the department of Library sciency is nearly 1500.

The department takes a part in the three step education processes (bachelor, master, doctors). Material- technology base of the department is got renewed regularly, is improved with the new educational supplies.

There are edication - “The formation and management of library work” and scientific research lab “The computer basis of library work” at the department.
