The department of Library Science and Bibliography was created in 1947, at BSU. In 1962, the department became faculty and this led up to the founding of separate bibliography department. Thus, separate bibliography department was established in 1968. In 1998, the department was renamed Bibliography science. Department has been in existence for almost 70 years, and is an integral part of the faculty of Lirbary science and information. During this period department's potensial grew and qualified teachers expanded the faculty's scope.
The primary function of department is to teach bibliographic disciplines and research in the area of bibliography science.
- Research and teaching are closely linked. The research and teaching efforts at the bibliography science department are centered around core topics of practical and therotical bibliography. The focus of research is on development of theory, history, methodology and organizational issues of national bibliography. The department is involved in an extensive number of basic research projects. Additionally, department offers targeted library information institutions specific consulting services. Department conducts teaching and research in its disciplines and fulfils other tasks according to its field.
Department staff consists of 8 people. Teaching staff include two associate professors, phd, two assistant professors, phd, one senior lecturer (substitute teacher), and one lecturer, phd. The proportion of teachinf staff holding a PhD is approximately 62%.
The first director of Bibliography science department was Ashraf Khalafov. ( associate professor, phd in pedagogical science, (1968-1978)). In 1979-1983 department was headed by the associate professor Haji Hasanov. From 1984 to 2007, Honored Worker of Culture, professor Zohrab Aliyev managed the Department. Current director of a department is Nadir Ismailov (associate professor, phd in pedagogical sciences ) elected in 2012. He is an active member of International Informatization Academy.
The department is a center for investigation in history, theory, organization and methodology of the national bibliography. Department has investigated and generalized history of Azerbaijan bibliography , bibliography of belles-lettres, literature, medical literature, social and political literature, pedagogical literature. The department is closely collaborating with the Azerbaijan National Library named M.F. Akhundov, Central Scientific Library of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and other libraries as well as the foreign (USA, Russia, Turkey etc) universities.
