Short biographical information

He was born on December 25 in 1937 in the village of Goycha in Western Azerbaijan. Finished the school in Tokhluca in 1950. During 1950-1955 years he was educated at the Librarianship section of philological faculty of Baku State University. He was a teacher, headmaster and senior lecturer during 1955-1978 years. Since 1978 he is a professor. With the diligence of Khalilov A.A. the Librarianship section of BSU became independent Librarianship faculty in 1962 and he was the first dean of this faculty and was on this duty about 25 years.

Khalafov is the head of the Library science department about 46 years from 1963. Khalafov gained fame as the first doctor of sciences in the field of history of library work in USSR and was the founder of bibliographical scientific school of Azerbaijan. For a long time Pr. Khalafov took an active as the member of the professional council according to the defense of doctors thesis in Moscow in USSR.

He participated as the member of the defense council or the opponent of some candidacy and doctor thesis defended by the culture and library construction, bibliographical history and theory problems in Azerbaijan, Russia, Georgia, and Uzbekistan.

The most scholars defended candidacy and doctor in the field of Library science is the specialists of Khalafov’s scientific school in our republic since 60th years of 20th century. The historical problems of library work and culture bibliographical theory and methodology, the high library and educational tasks and some other urgent scientific problems are the nucleus of Khalafov’s scientific searches in our country.

Khalafov, the founder of national bibliographical science, the first investigator of the history of library work and the first creator of the department training bibliographic specialists is famous not only in our republic but also in foreign countries. His activity was chosen the candidate of the 11th publication of the “International Information Book of Notable leaders” published by America Biographic Institution in 2001 and rewarded with honorary title and gold medals.

He pilgrimage to Mecca in 1998, to Mashhad in 1999, to Karbala in 2001.

Married, has 3 children.

  • 1950-1955, was educated at the Librarianship section of philogical faculty of BSU.
  • 1961, got degree of candidate of historical sciences, defended a thesis about “The history of library work in Azerbaijan (1920-1932 years)”. .

  • Since 1966, is the science adviser of the Azerbaijan Soviet Encyclopedia. .
  • 1970-1979, was the editor “Bibliography” series of scientific works of BSU. .
  • Since 1972, is the chairman of the section “Librarianship and Bibliography” of Science-
    Method Council of high and secondary profession education of Education Ministry of
    Azerbaijan USSR. .
  • 1982-1987, was the director of “Book” Nation University attached to the Republic Booklovers’ Society. .
  • 1990, the member of worker group made the law project of Azerbaijan Republic about education. .
  • Since 1995 is the deputy of the chairman of Veteran Council of BSU. .
  • 1998, the chairman of Publishing House of BSU. .
  • 1998, the chairman of workers’ group made the law project of Azerbaijan Republic about education. .
  • 1999, first time founded the Azerbaijan Librarians Society in our country and was elected the first president of that society. .
  • Since 1999, is the head of Librarian work scientific laboratory. .
  • 2000, the correspondent member of International Information Academy of the UN. .
  • 2001, was elected as the academician of International Information Academy of the UN.
